JOB SUMMARY

The Project Engineer I is a part of the overall engineering team that supports the Project Managers and Estimators in all operational and bidding aspects of a construction project. Upon commencement at Bay Cities, a PE1 will spend 6 months to 1 year in the estimating department. At the sole discretion of the Chief Estimator, when a PE1 has mastered all training as an Estimating Engineer, they will be assigned to a Project Management team.

JOB DESCRIPTION
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

Estimating Engineer:

  • Assist estimators by quantifying elements of construction using PDF plans, 2D CAD files, and 3D models including.
  • Scopes of work (not limited to) to quantify typically include:
    • Demolition,
    • Mass earthworks
    • Roadways
    • Highways,
    • Airports / BART Stations
    • School Facilities Site Work
    • Underground Utilities
  • Assist estimators preparing for bid closings – Preparing PDF Sheets Assist estimators in bid closing – running bids and comparing quotes.
  • Capable of generating earthwork volumes using PDF plans, or 3D models. Able to calculate earthwork volumes using Average End Area volume methods.
  • Using Microsoft Excel to create spreadsheets that can calculate, compare, and summarize quantities of construction materials.
  • Review contract documents, including drawings, and specifications.
  • Ability to understand the scope of work, project constraints, construction tolerances, and different material types.
  • Complete takeoffs utilizing partially complete or in progress design documents. Be able to conceptually visualize the general intent on incomplete drawings (advanced).
  • Maintain organized records, working drawings, and take off summaries.
  • Identify missing design elements or an overlap in work areas with other disciplines.
  • Create exhibits for review purposes showing take off assumptions and communicating to others what has been included or excluded from quantity take off.
  • Coordinate with other takeoff personnel working together to facilitate the takeoff off and quantity comparison of a project's construction components in a timely manner. Ability to stay on schedule and gauge the level of effort required to complete the task(s) at hand.
  • Be working to adapt, learn and apply lessons learned to ensure the success of the team
Project Engineer I:
  • Conform plans and specifications.
  • Distribute and update project plans / specifications to project team and subcontractors.
  • Perform material takeoffs using company takeoff software
  • Deliver public bid proposals
  • Attend Project Engineer training classes
  • Work with Area and Project Superintendents to track material needs and availability for all projects.
  • Place advance order for materials.
  • Perform material takeoffs on project plans utilizing Bluebeam or manually by hand.
  • Review, prepare, submit, and track submittals for projects assigned to your Project Management team. This includes suppliers and subcontractor submittals.
  • Assist in the coordination and scheduling of subcontractors and other forces.
  • Create new extra work cost codes and send to Project Manager / Contract Admin for implementation. Inform field of new cost code.
  • Review & monitor HCSS timecards created in the field for timely submission.
  • Site meetings or pre-construction meetings. Document / scribe meeting minutes.
  • Create and distribute traffic control plans.
  • Administrative support for remote offices (answering phones, scanning documents, filing, ordering supplies, processing mail, etc.)
  • Visit jobsite with Foreman, Superintendent or PE2 to acquire a better understanding of field activities and interact with field personnel and inspectors.
  • Gather, track and review field material / trucking tags.
  • Storm Water Prevention Pollution Plan training.
  • Assist Superintendent/Foreman in laying out on-site USA markings. Process form for calling in USA Markings.
  • Assist in preparing look ahead schedules, including notification for subs, trucking and material suppliers
  • Attend training sessions per BCPG Training Matrix.
  • Attend recruiting job fairs / information sessions.

Requirements

EDUCATION & EXPERIENCE
  • Bachelor’s degree in Civil Engineering, Construction Management, Business Administration, or related field preferred, or equivalent combinations of technical training and related experience.
  • 0-2 years construction estimating support, engineering, field support or similar experience.
